Why a Curveball Curves: The Incredible Science of Sports (Popular Mechanics)

Why a Curveball Curves: The Incredible Science of Sports (Popular Mechanics) Review

As a kid, I was never a big science fan . . . I've now become
more interested in the subject and you will, too, if you
read WHY A CURVEBALL CURVES--edited by Frank Vizard.

This book is a collection of articles from POPULAR MECHANICS
by such contributors as Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella,
Olympic swimming coach Bob Bowman and Buzz "The Shot
Doctor" Graman . . . you'll learn how certain hockey
players achieve greater speed on the ice, why swimming is
all about reducing drag and even what Babe Ruth had to say
about the mechanics of his home-run swing:

* Coordination, that is perfect timing and harmony of action, is a great
essential. You have got to develop rhythm and full utility of every
muscle. My whole body goes with every swing. I swing right from the
hips. And those who have seen me take a healthy sock at the ball know
what I mean. With that coordination there is the fact that I assume that
strength is behind it.

Whatever your favorite sport is, you'll probably find it covered
in this book . . . baseball, basketball, bowling, boxing, cycling,
football, golf, hockey, running, skiing, soccer, swimming and
diving, and tennis all get covered in separate chapters, often
accompanied by memorable photos.

I often found out some surprising information; e.g., about the
importance of the follow-through in golf:

* Irrelevant. In truth, a golfer could release the club from his hands
the moment after impact and it would make no difference--except,
of course, to your playing partners, who might not appreciate
having your eight-iron embedded between their shoulder
blades. Still, a full release of your arms and torso, leading to a classic
pose, with your belly button pointed to the target and your hands high
above your front ear? Well, that always looks nice for the cameras.

And then there was this passage about hockey's Wayne Gretzy
that ended with one of my all-time favorite sports quotations:

* By his own admission, Gretzky, who played most famously with the
Edmonton Oilers as well as several other teams during the 1980s and 1990s,
was not the strongest or fastest or most agile player on the ice even though
he was named MVP of the National Hockey League nine times. What
Gretzky did have was an ability that amounted to being able to see into
the future and visualize what was going to happen in the next few seconds.
In an article appearing in WIRED magazine, scientists working for the U. S.
Olympic team and the Australian Institute of Sport concluded that skills
like Gretzky's come from an innate ability to intuitively translate physical
cues dropped by opponents that are not apparent to most other athletes.
Scientists are at work figuring out how this skill can be taught, but this type
of perceptual training is still in its infancy. On the other hand, Gretzky may
have just been following his father's advice, given to him when he was
a youngster: "Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it
has been."

Methinks that's great advice for any sport . . . unfortunately,
putting it into practice was never quite that simple--or at least not
for me.

Why a Curveball Curves: The Incredible Science of Sports (Popular Mechanics) Overview

Sports. They get our blood pumping and our hearts racing. Fans scream and cheer as their favorite athletes run, throw, pedal, dive, or swing their way to victory. But what makes an athlete successful? Why do some players excel when others fall behind?
In Why a Curveball Curves, the experts at Popular Mechanics, along with top athletes, coaches, and sports journalists, explore the science behind sports. Fluid dynamics, biomechanics, and technology determine everything from speed in cycling to protection in football to performance measurement in all sports. This book is designed for both the player and the fan, helping athletes become better-prepared and giving enthusiasts a more complete understanding and appreciation of the subtle nuances of competition.
The explanations are clear, entertaining, and written by people who really love their game. The issues discussed range from Tiger’s swing to Lance’s legs, from gene doping to the physics of why a seemingly straight kick curves drastically just before its target—in other words, how to bend it like Beckham—plus so much more.
Among the specialists who weigh in are: Matt Bahr, who kicked the winning field goal in Super Bowl XXV; Bob Bowman, who coached swimmer Michael Phelps to a record-setting eight medals in the 2004 Olympics; Lou Piniella, manager of the Chicago Cubs; Peter Brancazio, Professor Emeritus of Physics at Brooklyn College and author of Sports Science; and Jim Kaat, a major league pitcher for 25 years.

The Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mount Everest

The Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mount Everest Review

I have always enjoyed reading non-fiction and especially those concerning exploration. I found "The Lost Explorer" exactly as I anticipated. It was full of information and anticipation, even though I read it many years after George Mallory was found, I still was spellbound on every page. Well written and well researched by the actual finder of George Mallory!

The Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mount Everest Overview

In 1999, Conrad Anker found the body of George Mallory on Mount Everest, casting an entirely new light on the mystery of the lost explorer. On 8 June 1924, George Leigh Mallory and Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine were last seen climbing towards the summit of Everest. The clouds closed around them and they were lost to history, leaving the world to wonder whether or not they actually reached the summit - some 29 years before Edmund Hillary and Tensing Norgay. On 1 May 1999, Conrad Anker, one of the world's foremost mountaineers, made the momentous discovery - Mallory's body, lying frozen into the scree at 27,000 feet on Everest's north face. Recounting this day, the authors go on to assess the clues provided by the body, its position, and the possibility that Mallory had successfully climbed the Second Step, a 90-foot sheer cliff that is the single hardest obstacle on the north face. This is a remarkable story of a charming and immensely able man, told by an equally talented modern climber.

His Father's Son: Earl and Tiger Woods

His Father's Son: Earl and Tiger Woods Review

His Father's Son: Earl and Tiger Woods Overview

A revealing and intimate biography of the man who influenced Tiger Woods the most-his father, Earl Woods.

From the time he entered the public consciousness as a two year-old golf prodigy on The Mike Douglas Show, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods has often been viewed less as a human being and more as a ball-striking machine-and his carefully guarded image and emotionless persona seemed to guarantee that it would remain that way. Even after his recent bombshell adultery scandal, the public still knows very little about the man behind the golf clubs and multimillion-dollar endorsement deals. But one thing is certain: Earl Woods, Tiger's beloved and now deceased father, knew him better and influenced his life more than anyone. So, in this case, to know the father is to know the son.

In His Father's Son, Tom Callahan offers a full-blown biography of Earl Dennison Woods, the Vietnam War veteran who raised the golf phenomenon, and in turn, a full-blown biography of Tiger Woods. With exclusive access to and interviews with Earl, Tiger, and a host of friends, family members, coaches, and veteran golf players, Callahan provides an unprecedented look into their lives and the remarkably close relationship that Earl and Tiger had. With unparalleled insight into the man who made Tiger Woods the person that he is, His Father's Son is part biography and part father-and-son love story.

Fever Pitch

Fever Pitch Review

It seemed as though this book was referenced just about everywhere this summer during the World Cup (at least by the more literate columnists), and a long while back, I had loved High Fidelity. I thought it might be worth a read.

And goodness was it. It's a little difficult to explain why. The many essays and reflections within the book are largely uncategorized. These are just things that happened, things Hornby has thought and experienced in his years as an Arsenal fan, assembled in a thematically random order. If you read it, you won't close the book thinking that there was a point to it.

And yet, I enjoyed every minute of the book. I am a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, despite growing up in Texas, simply because I watched a game one day on WGN when the Cubs were on instead of Rescue Rangers, and my experience at each point in Fever Pitch was, "Yep, that's what it's like." Fever Pitch describes the joy, the anger, the irrationality, the pity, the confidence, the awe, the sense of belonging, the despair (etc.) that devotion to a sports team inspires. He captures it all, and it's funny and sad and, most of all, truthful.

Fever Pitch Overview

This is a book about identity, belonging, obsession; about afternoons in the driving rain and bitter cold and glorious, unforgettable goals; getting your head read in Hampstead and punched at Highbury; the dazzling skills of the gods of football and leaving your girlfriend lying fainted on the terraces because Arsenal are about to score. It's about the moments of ecstasy in one man's life. And his pain. And it's about the only true question there is: Which comes first, Football or Life?

Fever Pitch Specifications

In the States, Nick Hornby is best know as the author of High Fidelity and About a Boy, two wickedly funny novels about being thirtysomething and going nowhere fast. In Britain he is revered for his status as a fanatical football writer (sorry, fanatical soccer writer), owing to Fever Pitch--which is both an autobiography and a footballing Bible rolled into one. Hornby pinpoints 1968 as his formative year--the year he turned 11, the year his parents separated, and the year his father first took him to watch Arsenal play. The author quickly moved "way beyond fandom" into an extreme obsession that has dominated his life, loves, and relationships. His father had initially hoped that Saturday afternoon matches would draw the two closer together, but instead Hornby became completely besotted with the game at the expense of any conversation: "Football may have provided us with a new medium through which we could communicate, but that was not to say that we used it, or what we chose to say was necessarily positive." Girlfriends also played second fiddle to one ball and 11 men. He fantasizes that even if a girlfriend "went into labor at an impossible moment" he would not be able to help out until after the final whistle.

Fever Pitch is not a typical memoir--there are no chapters, just a series of match reports falling into three time frames (childhood, young adulthood, manhood). While watching the May 2, 1972, Reading v. Arsenal match, it became embarrassingly obvious to the then 15-year-old that his white, suburban, middle-class roots made him a wimp with no sense of identity: "Yorkshire men, Lancastrians, Scots, the Irish, blacks, the rich, the poor, even Americans and Australians have something they can sit in pubs and bars and weep about." But a boy from Maidenhead could only dream of coming from a place with "its own tube station and West Indian community and terrible, insoluble social problems."

Fever Pitch reveals the very special intricacies of British football, which readers new to the game will find astonishing, and which Hornby presents with remarkable humor and honesty--the "unique" chants sung at matches, the cold rain-soaked terraces, giant cans of warm beer, the trains known as football specials carrying fans to and from matches in prisonlike conditions, bottles smashing on the tracks, thousands of policemen waiting in anticipation for the cargo of hooligans. The sport and one team in particular have crept into every aspect of Hornby's life--making him see the world through Arsenal-tinted spectacles. --Naomi Gesinger

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible: The Ultimate Guide to Power, Precision, and Long-Term Performance

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible: The Ultimate Guide to Power, Precision, and Long-Term Performance Review

If thise book cost 10+$ I would say it would be a borderline buy. This has good information regarding the mental game, and also helps to make people realize how important the physical part of the game is. He helps you understand how important staying in shape is and keeping your muscles working so they don't tire out mid season. He has very good info regarding the Jobe work out, and has good workouts, but with semi outdated technology. Love the book and am buying 2 other more in depth mental books. This book is very good for any age/level of baseball and helps people to understand you can go on talent alone, but it only gets you so far.

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible: The Ultimate Guide to Power, Precision, and Long-Term Performance Overview

How does Nolan Ryan still do it?

At 43 years old, Nolan Ryan is a marvel. He is still blowing his fastballs by hitters at an age when most pitchers have long since retired -- or have learned to depend on guile instead of power. But the Ryan express keeps chugging on, getting more unhittable, not less.

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible tells us the secrets of Ryan's success. Drawing on Ryan's practical experience and Tom House's research expertise, it shows how the right combination of exercise and motivation can help a pitcher develop to his greatest potential.

Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible includes:

* Nolan Ryan's complete fitness program for pitchers -- including weight training, aerobic exercise, and diet -- based on the latest scientific research and his 24 years of experience as a major leaguer.
* The most up-to-date methods for preventing arm injuries by establishing proper mechanics, a conditioning base, and throwing work loads.
* A timetable for keeping a pitcher in top shape year-round, including specific exercise intervals to meet the individual strength demands of each pitcher's throwing motion, maximum velocity, and maximum weekly number of pitches.
* An in-depth presentation of Ryan's pitching strategy -- how he prepares himself mentally for a game, an analysis of his pitch selection for different types of hitters, and how he applies his training regimen to improving his effectiveness on the mound.

Illustrated with black-and-white photos of Ryan in action, along with photos and line drawings of the recommended exercises, Nolan Ryan's Pitcher's Bible is the ultimate book on pitching, by the ultimate pitcher.

No Way Down: Life and Death on K2

No Way Down: Life and Death on K2 Review

I have been fascinated by mountain-climbing stories since seeing a Walt Disney two- or three-parter when I was probably 8 years old about, I think, three guys climbing the Matterhorn, and the tragedies and triumphs of that expedition. I can also remember thinking a variation of, "Those guys are nuts. No way would you catch me doing something like that."

It definitely takes a specific breed of person to undertake a climb of this magnitude (I can't even imagine trying a controlled, constructed wall climb) and all seem equally endowed with monumental egos, disregard of what other people would consider essential (family, jobs, safety), and a need to live on the edge - pardon the pun. "No Way Down", by Graham Bowley, addresses one horrific week on K2, second-tallest mountain in the world, and those who came to grief on that dark occasion.

I've never been able to come to terms with the almost-cavalier attitude about the possibility of disaster on these mountains - I reviewed another, more gripping account in HIGH CRIMES: The Fate of Everest in an Age of Greed by Michael Kodas, a few years ago - where it is practically assumed that not everybody in an expedition is going to make it, or at the very least, make it unscathed. Tales like the one of Beck Weathers, with his frostbitten nose falling off, are rife; people who die of a fall, or exposure, or an avalanche, are left on the mountain where they fall, due to the extreme difficulty involved in removing them. So the overwhelming question in my mind has always been, why? Why do people feel a compulsion to try to beat the very long odds, only to stand on top of a mountain for not very long? (It takes so long to reach the top, even in good weather, that it is necessary to move right along once you've gotten there, in order to make camp before nightfall, or there are horrible consequences.) It looks glorious, from the safety of a cushy armchair in front of a crackling fireplace; and, sure, I'd like to see the view from up there too - but there seems to be a point where the Almighty steps in and says, "This isn't really what I meant when I said, 'Go Forth'."

Editorializing aside, "no Way Down" is a very well-reearched and disopinionated book concerning the 2008 ascent of K2 by several different expeditions at once, and the tragedy that resulted (68 people were on the mountain, although some were support staff at the base camps; 11 people were killed, two badly injured). The sheer number of climbers created bottlenecks and delays that contributed greatly to the disaster; egos got in the way; there were several people on the mountain who probably lacked enough experience or stamina; and Mr Bowley presents a measured account of the main characters without pointing a finger at any one person.

A fast read, it will make you certain that you don't want to take up a challenge like this, while giving you a sincere appreciation of the sacrifices these climbers make in order to follow their dream.

No Way Down: Life and Death on K2 Overview

In this riveting work of narrative nonfiction, journalist Graham Bowley re-creates one of the most dramatic tales of death and survival in mountaineering history, vividly taking readers through the tragic 2008 K2 ascent that claimed the lives of eleven climbers, severely injured two others, and made headlines around the world.

With its near-perfect pyramid shape, the 28,251-foot K2—the world's second-highest mountain, some 800 feet shorter than the legendary Everest hundreds of miles to the south—has lured serious climbers for decades. In 2008, near the end of a brief climbing season cut even shorter by bad weather, no fewer than ten international teams—some experienced, others less prepared—crowded the mountain's dangerous slopes with their Sherpas and porters, waiting to ascend.

Finally, on August 1, they were able to set off. But hindered by poor judgment, lack of equipment, and overcrowded conditions, the last group did not summit until nearly 8 p.m., hours later than planned. Then disaster struck when a huge ice chunk from above the Bottleneck, a deadly 300-foot avalanche-prone gulley just below the summit, came loose and destroyed the fixed guide ropes. More than a dozen climbers and porters still above the Bottleneck—many without oxygen and some with no headlamps—faced the near impossibility of descending in the blackness with no guideline and no protection. Over the course of the chaotic night, some would miraculously make it back. Others would not.

Based on in-depth interviews with surviving climbers and many Sherpas, porters, and family and friends of the deceased, No Way Down reveals for the first time the full dimensions of this harrowing drama.

Surgical Speed Shooting: How To Achieve High-Speed Marksmanship In A Gunfight

Surgical Speed Shooting: How To Achieve High-Speed Marksmanship In A Gunfight Review

This is the third book I've read recently, but the first by this author. I was really impressed by his attention to detail in the fundamentals of grip, stance, balance and trigger control (special focus on taking up the slack). His arguments for using the isosceles caused me to change my stance. Overall, this additiion to my library resulted in faster shooting, improved accuracy and a better feel to calling the shot. I thought Andy Stanford communicated his thoughts and suggestions in an exceptional manner.

Kauai Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Bike, Paddle, Surf (

Kauai Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Bike, Paddle, Surf ( Review

We're just back from our second visit to Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii after a 7 year absence. We chose the Kauai Trailblazer book since it covers so many hikes which my wife and I do to unwind. What we found this time were a whole lot of places a few paces off the standard tourist track. Their take on Kauai is different from all the other guides since it mainly lists all the freebie adventure possibilities. Getting on the trails and snorkeling costs zero and since they put alot of detail in their directions like round trip distance and difficulty it saved us precious vacation time. We got alot of mileage out of it.

The writing is clear and the color section spectacular. We didn't notice the Best Of section at first but once we got there we referred to it constantly. Their picks on where to snorkel in certain areas were the BEST and even knowing where to enter the water and check for outgoing currents was valuable. A super purchase for a much needed vacation in paradise.

Kauai Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Snorkel, Bike, Paddle, Surf ( Overview

Dream On: One Hack Golfer's Challenge to Break Par in a Year

Dream On: One Hack Golfer's Challenge to Break Par in a Year Review

I am an avid golfer, a voracious reader and I particular enjoy insightful reads about the game of golf. So the decision to read "Dream On" was a bit of a no-brainer. Having said that, I got much more than I bargained for when I read "Dream On." The author unveils his process in achieving what some would assume to be a near impossible goal: to go from being unable to break 100 to shooting under par in ONE ROUND of golf, within one year. The process that Mr. Richardson discusses is, in my opinion, so much more meaningful than what he achieves and therein lies the real value of "Dream On." The author gives you great insight into HOW he achieved his goal. He provides a detailed accounting of his process of visualizing one's goal, identifying and understanding the obstacles to reaching that goal, developing a PLAN for success and most importantly, committing to the process and work needed to overcome the obstacles and achieve success. If you have a goal that you would like to achieve and especially if it is a big, hairy, audacious goal, you will benefit greatly from reading "Dream On" and applying the principles that the author used in hitting his "impossible" target!

Dream On: One Hack Golfer's Challenge to Break Par in a Year Overview

The #1 bestselling golf book in the UK, now available in North America. Meet John Richardson. A typical weekend golfer who enjoyed the game but couldn’t break 100. Married. One seven-year-old daughter. Full-time job. But he differed from the average 24-handicapper in one crucial way: He was determined to break par within a year at the local golf course, while working a demanding full-time job and trying his best to remain a good husband and father.

Virtually everyone he came across told him that it wasn’t possible. Famed Scottish golfer/commentator Sam Torrance advised John to “dream on,” and PGA Tour pro Darren Clarke told him that three years would be a more realistic time frame. Add to the mix a range of golfing injuries, family responsibilities, and a rigorous work schedule, and you can understand why there were so many doubters.

Dream On is the hilarious and inspiring story of how John achieved the seemingly impossible—from how the initial challenge took shape and the methods he used to dramatically improve his game, to that glorious day, less than one year later, when he broke par and played the best round of his life.

What It Takes to Be #1 : Vince Lombardi on Leadership

What It Takes to Be #1 : Vince Lombardi on Leadership Review

The book, What It Takes To Be #1: Vince Lombardi on Leadership, by Vince Lombardi Jr. is a nonfiction book about leadership. This book's main focus is on Vince Lombardi's leadership philosophy as well as winning. Me being a high school sports player and reading this book, has changed my outlook on how to be a leader and number one. This book teaches you about work ethics and how to lead your team to a victory. This would be a great read for someone starting their own business to someone who wants to just read a book. The values taught in What It Takes To Be #1 are incredible. Loyalty, honor, dedication, motivation and hard work are all skills every person should have or learn. Vince Lombardi Jr. does a great job laying out everything taught in this book into a model or as it is in the book the "Lombardi Rules". Every chapter focuses on a new concept with "rules" then explaining this concept in depth. This provides an extraordinary view on how Coach Lombardi lives his life and how he coached. Throughout the book, quotes pop up that are meaning full to the books concepts such as, "If it is not right, do not do it. If it is not true, do not say it." The pros in this book are that it helps you become a better winner, the concepts are well modeled, it shows how great Vince Lombardi was at being a leader, and it will make people better people. I would most definitely recommend this book for any occasion. To be honest, I believe there are no cons in this book, but I wish it was a little less confusing. Other than that, the book What It Takes To Be #1 is a phenomenal book to read.

Fantasy Football For Dummies

Fantasy Football For Dummies Review

If you are thinking about playing fantasy football or even if you played a little last year and want to improve those basic skills, get this book! It is a great introduction to fantasy football. It covers everything to get you started including where to play online and look online for information on players. Many of the tips are exactly what you need to draft, manage and improve your team for a winning season.

After reading Fantasy Football for Dummies, it is obvious that Martin Signore has played the game for many years and his love of the hobby shines through. Once again, the winning "dummies" format makes it easy. I am amazed at how much information he provides. Martin even discusses Auction leagues which many of todays FF books ignore. He hits all the right techniques and even includes some advanced draft strategies.

I usually find the "part of tens" pages in a dummies book tedious, but Martin has provided a great Top 10 list of mistakes to avoid and perhaps even more importantly ten fixes to make to your team after draft day. The draft is not the end but instead should be the starting point for a championship team. You should constantly try to improve your team through trades and/or the waiver wire. A great manager can always look back and point out a significant improvement during the season.

This is definitely the book of choice for anyone who wants an introduction to the greatest hobby of all time, Fantasy Football.

Sam Hendricks, author of "Fantasy Football Guidebook: Your Comprehensive Guide to Playing Fantasy Football" and "Fantasy Football Almanac"

Your Pilot's License

Your Pilot's License Review

This book reads a bit like a reference book and a bit like textbook. Many problems I have when trying to do something I've never done before (i.e. flying) is that I never know where to start. Knowing that I don't know what I don't know can turn me off to a new activity quickly. This book gives a good overview of what kinds of flying are available, what you can expect to spend, where to look for like-minded people in your area, finding mentors to help you, choosing a flight instructor and many other types of knowledge you will need to not only pass ground school, but apply during your check ride. It also tells you what to expect with that, too.

Overall a great book to show your ignorance of the subject and how to make yourself smart. I hihghly recommend it for anyone wanting a "pilot's primer." If you already know a bit about the flying culture, this book might not be for you but may still have insights you may have overlooked or refresh your knowledge on certain points.

Your Pilot's License Overview

Previous editions of this classic guided tens of thousands through the often unnerving process of getting their piloting licenses. This revised edition continues to provide encouragement and practical information, and adds new material on the recreational pilot license, the primary aircraft certification program, the new airspace designation system, and other subjects of interest to potential pilots. The book also reflects the most recent changes in regulations, testing, and procedures. This unique approach thoroughly encompasses all the information student pilots need to learn. The book takes the guesswork out of learning to fly by anticipating the potential pilot's questions and clearly presenting words and pictures to help dispel doubts and build confidence.

The Cyclist's Training Bible

The Cyclist's Training Bible Review

I read this book twice and nearly gave up on it several times. I repeatedly found the complexity as befuddling as I did amusing. Not only is the program complicated, so is the book.

But I still recommend it.

In order to create a program, I sat down in earnest with a stack of post-its. For everyone's benefit, these are the pages that you need to mark:

pp 47-49
pp 144-147
pp 300-307

Forget the templates. Just create your own Excel sheet for the training diary. I decided not to follow his strength training guideline (more complexity, too much upper body).

Bicycling Science, Second Edition

Bicycling Science, Second Edition Review

As Miss Jean Brodie said, "For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like." She meant it as an insult, but I don't. Bicycling Science is nerd heaven, full of physics, engineering, molecular biology, aerodynamics and all kinds of other scientific manna. If you have an appetite for charts, graphs, and research studies, then this book will delight you with its explanations of why bikes work so well with the human body.

It's not casual reading by any means. I'd prefer the same information presented in slightly less academic tones, but that doesn't mean it isn't accurate or interesting. So I dip into my copy for short bursts. For me, it's not a cover-to-cover read, but it's been on my bedside table for months because I pick it up regularly.

Bicycling Science may well be more technical info than a casual fan can absorb. However, it's a great reference that will demystify your bike -- if that's the sort of thing you like.

Bicycling Science, Second Edition Overview

The second edition of Bicycling Science includes new information on recent achievements and experiements in human-powered transportation, from the "ultimate human-powered vehicle" (UHPV), in which supine riders can achieve speeds well over 60 mph, to human-powered aircraft, boats, and rail transportation. New chapters cover the history of bicycle and human-power technology and science and the speed-power relationships of various modes and vehicles, including performance predictions for the UHPV and the "commuter human-powered vehicle." The chapters on braking, steering, friction, air drag, rider cooling, and transmissions and gearing have all been enlarged and updated. James McCullagh, editor of Bicycling Magazine, has written a foreword for this edition, which also includes many new illustrations.

Ashley Book of Knots

Ashley Book of Knots Review

I'm a newbie, as I've only had my copy of Ashley for 25 years, unlike the fellow who bought his in 1945. :^) But I want to echo most of what's been said.

If you're considering buying this book, how well it will fit your needs depends on what your needs are. I strongly recommend you read the 2 and 3 star reviews, as what they contain are valid comments about the book. Some of the criticisms that have been made of the book are:

* It's been in print for 60 years and hasn't been modernized.
* It was based on (mostly) natural fiber ropes. It doesn't have relevant discussion of more modern fibers.
* Some of the drawings can be hard to understand.
* The indexing could be better.

If you're reading this, you have access to a computer, so you can learn an enormous amount about knots from the web, including color pictures, verbose descriptions, and animations. It's a fantastic resource. Why, then, would anyone spend 50 bucks on a book like Ashley?

If you just want to learn some practical knots, then there are many books that will suit your needs (if you can't get what you want from the web for free). You can visit a library to take a look at different books.

Yet I still think Ashley's book belongs in my library (you'll have to make your own decision as to whether it belongs in your library). I still pick it up and get immersed in it a few times a year. It's fascinating reading and learning about all the different types of knots and other ropework.

There are some very practical things I've learned from this book. One of my favorites is #364, which explains how to tie a constrictor knot to fasten a hose to a hose fitting. I've used this many times over the last 20+ years. My wife complained about my using worm-drive hose clamps to hold on the machined brass fittings and I had to agree -- they hurt one's hand when tightening a connection. Ashley's method with the constrictor works perfectly -- so well, in fact, that I leave it on permanently. I use 1/8" braided nylon rope. I also use it to attached compressed air hose to its fittings. You should also be aware that it could be an emergency fix for e.g. a broken radiator clamp. I've even tied it in wire.

While I'm at it, I'll also pass on a comment about the knots I use. For 95% of the things I do (and my wife and kids tease me about how much I use rope and twine to do lifting, pulling, and lashing), I use the bowline, constrictor, span loop, and one and two half hitches (often the second hitch is slipped). I still use other knots, but one or more of those four are involved whenever I pick up a piece of rope.

Oh, and since I use the bowline more than the other knots, I'll pass on a relatively unknown way of tying this knot. I don't remember where I learned it (it wasn't from Ashley), but the method is #1788. I consider it extremely important, as once you learn it, you can tie it completely by feel, in the dark, the rain, or a snowstorm with ice-cold hands -- and do it in a few seconds (with practice). The key is to pull on the knot properly so that you feel it collapse into a bowline. This is such an important way of tying the knot, I think it should be taught to everyone. Yet I've never run across anyone who knew the method (except the person who taught it to me).

Ashley Book of Knots Overview

Describes every practical knot, what it looks like, where it comes from, and how to tie it. The book includes 4,000 knots, with all the varieties of shipboard knots as well as knots used by butchers, steeplejacks, electric linesmen, knitters, cobblers, surgeons, poachers and cowboys.

Ashley Book of Knots Specifications

The Ashley Book of Knots takes us back to a time when knots saved lives and put dinner on the table. Whether out at sea or in a pioneer cabin, knots were a part of daily life, one that is nearly lost today. But in this attractive, well-organized archive of more than 3,900 different knots--presented through 7,000 illustrations--the art of knot tying lives on, both as a historical reference and a reservoir of handy knowledge.

Tactical Pistol Shooting: Your Guide to Tactics & Techniques that Work

Tactical Pistol Shooting: Your Guide to Tactics & Techniques that Work Review

Let me just say at the outset that this book is worth buying if for nothing else it will save you hundreds of dollars in wasted ammo at the range. (As a caveat to revolver shooters, this book focuses on semi-automatic pistols, so you might want to go a different direction if that is your weapon of choice. That said, the techniques discussed are applicable to revolvers with the exception of grip.) I found the sections on stance, grip, sight picture, trigger pull, reloading, and jam clearing to be well worth the purchase. I applied the author's suggestion regarding dry fire drills and immediately figured out my trigger pull issues the next time out to the range. There is also a whole list of drills at the end of the book to do. So from a basic pistol marksmanship standpoint, this is a fine reference and is well photographed. I wouldn't have minded some overhead diagrams on certain techniques (for example, a line like "orient to your dominant eye" is confusing without a diagram, i.e. orient how?), but that is a small quible.

Beyond the basic shooting aspect of this book I found the sections on "tactics" or "combat mind set" to be lacking. Not because the philosophy wasn't valid, but because most topics were discussed merely in bullet points or lists in simple declarative terms. Perhaps all of those topics are too vast to be compiled in any one book, and this presents itself as a primer or introduction to those ideas, but for a book that purports to be a guide to these techniques, I expected a little more background. For example, threat conditions were discussed, but merely in terms of "definition" and when someone should be at one of those conditions, not in any detail on what one does in those situations, i.e., a "tactic." Another example would be drawing from a concealed holster, the draw technique is discussed but not the finer points of concealment, concealment choices, etc. Also, I expected to see chapters on house/room clearing, and how to index a threat situation. This is another area where declaratively the author states that you must "index your threats" to choose your target, but goes into no greater detail on how one would do that, i.e., a tip, an anecdote or two.

Tactical Pistol Shooting: Your Guide to Tactics & Techniques that Work Overview

The essential reference for the beginning shooter, Tactical Pistol Shooting, 2nd edition, provides a thorough introduction to the use of tactical pistols. Readers get instruction in defense mindsets, pistol terms, shooting fundamentals and shooting positions, emphasis on important safety precautions and lawful personal defense. Readers will also find advanced techniques, training drills and complicated shooting environments. More than 350 detailed, step-by-step, color photos clearly illustrate the techniques shooters will master to become more adept with a tactical pistol. Appendices include a discussion of shooting standards, equipment supplies listings, progress worksheets and more.

The Blind Side (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Movie Tie-in Editions)

The Blind Side (Movie Tie-in Edition) (Movie Tie-in Editions) Review

Everybody knows the story recounted in The Blind Side, so I won't recap it here for you. I'll just tell you this was a great book - one of the best I've read this year. It was historical narrative, but unlike other books of this genre by other authors, Michael Lewis did several things really well with this one.

He managed the web of characters really well. He gave background and history on most of the folks, and introduced you to all the main and supporting characters but never to the point where the complexities made it difficult to keep everybody straight (like, for example, in Charlie Wilson's War -- which, granted, covered a wider scope but got bogged down too much with all the characters). It was easy to follow and remember who everybody was - from all the assistant coaches to Michael Oher's mom and siblings to his long lost childhood friend.

Lewis also managed the pace and scope of the story well. It never felt jumpy or choppy (like, say, 5 Cities That Ruled the World) like it was zooming in and out from metanarrative to minute details and back. The pace was even and kept my interest the entire time. Anecdotes from football were timely and neatly inserted to highlight and complement Oher's and the Tuohy's story, and broke it up just enough to keep you reading.

And finally, Lewis didn't beat you over the head with any sort of moral of the story, so to speak. He simply told the story and let its power speak for itself, and then left it up to the reader to draw any sort of conclusions or morals they wanted. (A practice which is much too underdone in writing these days - and which evidently allowed many people to get upset rather than inspired by the book. According to his new afterword, he got letters from conservatives, liberals, whites, blacks, Christians, and nonchristians all complaining about the story.)

Lewis is a great storyteller and this was a great story. That combination is a powerful force which results in a great book.

Secretariat: The Making of a Champion

Secretariat: The Making of a Champion Review

William Nack, Secretariat: The Making of a Champion 2/E (Da Capo, 2002)

I finished this book back in July, and here it is November. I don't know why it is that I sometimes have problems figuring out what to say about a book to the point where I end up leaving it for four months, and why it is that it's always a horse book (to this day, I still have not reviewed Jane Schwartz' Ruffian: Burning from the Start, which I read in 2004) that causes this sort of blockage, but so it is.

Obviously, this is the story of Secretariat, the horse who wowed a nation in 1972 and 1973. The subtitle should have twigged me to the fact that the later part of his career was going to get short shrift, but somehow I didn't grasp that until I got to the penultimate chapter and we were still only up to the Belmont. Still, it's your basic horse biography--a focus on the horse himself, yes, but also a lot of talking about the horse's connections. Oftentimes, that's not nearly as interesting (at least, for the horse lover), but Nack's writing combined with the momentous events going on around him at the time keep the areas where the book focuses on the human part of the equation almost as interesting as the parts about Secretariat himself. (Prospective authors of horse biographies may be wondering just how much, in fact, readers can take of reading about stall routines, workouts, getting ready for races, cooling down from races, and all the rest of the minutiae of the horse himself. I'm here to tell you that such a book would be my favorite of the horse biographies I've read.)

The new edition of the book published in 2002 also contains, as an afterword, Nack's touching Sports Illustrated essay on Secretariat's death, for which Nack--purely by coincidence--was on hand. Even if you already own the original edition of the book, it's at least worth getting it out of the library to read the supplementary materials in the updated edition. This is very good stuff, as most horse biographies are. ****

Secretariat: The Making of a Champion Overview

"Secretariat is an elegantly crafted, exhilarating tale of speed and power, grace and greatness, told with such immediacy that the reader is lost in the rush of horses and the clatter and ring of the grandstand." --Laura Hillenbrand, author of Seabiscuit.

In 1973, Secretariat, the greatest thoroughbred in horse-racing history, won the Triple Crown. The only horse to ever break the two-minute mark in winning the Kentucky Derby until last year's winner Monarchos, Secretariat also pulled off one of the most astounding victories in the annals of horse racing by winning the Belmont Stakes by a record-breaking thirty-one lengths. Now William Nack updates his acclaimed portrait with a new afterword that examines the legacy of one of ESPN's "100 Greatest Athletes of the Century," and the only horse to ever grace the covers of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated all in the same week.

The Time-Crunched Cyclist: Fit, Fast, and Powerful in 6 Hours a Week

The Time-Crunched Cyclist: Fit, Fast, and Powerful in 6 Hours a Week Review

I grabbed TTCC because I signed up for a metric century and was not in any shape to do it. When I started the program, I could do about 20 miles over roughly 1 hour of riding before I was done. I followed the program pretty closely, but sometimes missed the 1 or 2 midweek rides and was still able to complete my metric century in 3hrs and 15mins after 9 weeks.

What I really appreciated is that the book explains the method behind the madness. I changed my pedaling style to a higher cadence and was able to keep my lactic acid buildup to a minimum. I have focused on the using my heartrate as a gauge for effort and that made a huge difference.

My only point of disappointment was that I started gaining weight (especially around weeks 3-5) as I added muscle mass. It was discouraging, but I did see a change to my physique as my legs got bigger and my stomach got smaller. At week 9, my weight is down 5lbs from the start, but my body has changed and my clothes fit much looser, especially around the waist. This book won't make you drop pounds quickly, but it will make you quicker on the bike.

I was very impressed that Chris & Jim have been very responsive to questions i asked via Twitter ([...]) about the program. It is very unusual for an author to answer individual questions like that.

I have a friend who is training for a true century and I've already bought him a copy. I would recommend you pick up a copy, too.

The Time-Crunched Cyclist: Fit, Fast, and Powerful in 6 Hours a Week Overview

As cycling's popularity grows with men and women in their thirties, forties, fifties, and beyond, the traditional ideas about training for endurance sports need a new approach to reflect the daily challenges faced by parents and working professionals. In The Time-Crunched Cyclist, Chris Carmichael presents that new approach to cycling training. Using elements from the same program he designed for Tour de France winner Armstrong, this guide shows how to build competitive cycling fitness on a realistic schedule -- a schedule that fits into the busy lives of today's active middle-agers. Complete with training plans, case studies, nutritional guidelines, and success stories, "The Time-Crunched Cyclist" shows cyclists how to push the pace in the local group ride, have fun, and perform well in local races, or tackle a challenging 100-mile fundraiser ride without committing to a high-volume training program.

The Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2

The Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2 Review

Jennifer Jordan invites the reader to care deeply about Dudley Wolfe, "The Last Man on the Mountain." The reader may not be interested in climbing the tallest mountains in the world, but will be intrigued to discover why the ill-fated, 1939 K2 expedition resulted in the death of four people. Jordan had done so much research for this account, that the reader might think that she, Jordan, was there too, as an eye-witness to the events. She presents Dudley Wolfe as a person who deserves both our sympathy and our respect. Jordan's excellent style engages the reader from the opening personal and family history of Wolfe to the aftermath of the failed expedition that is presented in the epilogue.

What I liked best was her re-creation of Dudley Wolfe. He seemed like a guy I'd like to have known.

She is a good writer. She made the story interesting when she wrote about personal interactions. However, as a person who is not a mountain climber, I would have liked two things: a glossary of terms like crampons, ice couloir and a description of the steps mountain climbers use to climb a mountain, as I have no clue. Having such descriptions would increase the audience.

I would also have enjoyed more maps. A number of high mountains that are near to K2 are mentioned, e.g. Everest, Nanga Parbat. It would have been nice to have a map which showed all the top 5, e.g., with national boundaries. Maps as fly-leafs for front and back covers would work very nicely and could be added to a second printing. An index to the maps and references to them in the text would have been helpful.

As a fan of mystery stories, I would have been interested in how Jordan deduced some of the events leading to the removal of all the camp supplies from the upper camps, especially since there were discrepancies in the descriptions coming from the various participants.

With this book comes the satisfaction of knowing that the most worthy member of this expedition can be restored to honor, following many decades of apparent disgrace. I'm sure that Dudley Wolfe's family members must be genuinely grateful for Jordan's careful work.

The Last Man on the Mountain: The Death of an American Adventurer on K2 Overview

The untold story of Dudley Wolfe and America’s ill-fated 1939 expedition to the roof of the world. In 1939 the Savage Mountain claimed its first victim. Born into vast wealth yet uneasy with a life of leisure, Dudley Wolfe, of Boston and Rockport, Maine, set out to become the first man to climb K2, the world’s second-highest mountain and, in the opinion of mountaineers, an even more formidable challenge than Mt. Everest. Although close to middle age and inexperienced at high altitude, Wolfe, with the team leader, made it higher than any other members of the expedition, but he couldn’t get back down. Suffering from altitude sickness and severe dehydration, he was abandoned at nearly 25,000 feet; it would be another sixty-three years before Jennifer Jordan discovered his remains.

In a story where The Great Gatsby meets Into Thin Air, readers follow Wolfe from the salons of Europe to the most forbidding landscape on earth. Wolfe went to K2 to find his own strength, only to encounter his teammates’ lethal weaknesses in a place called the Death Zone. 16 pages of photographs

How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Guided Chaos Combatives)

How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Guided Chaos Combatives) Review

The AttackProof book from the Guided Chaos Combatives group is one of the best sources I've ever read about internal martial arts principles in true self-defense applications. Unfortunately, the book has one glaring fault. While experienced martial artists will recognize the value of the material in AttackProof, the average person who has no self-defense training will find that much of the information is so advanced that it would be difficult for them to use it in a real situation.

Enter "How to Fight For Your Life", a distillation of the AttackProof book for those who have little experience with martial arts and self defense training, but want to learn practical skills to keep themselves safe. This book accomplishes that goal with easy to read prose, good illustrations, and simple strategies and methods that are easily understandable. Perhaps most importantly, the concepts in this book can easily be absorbed by the average person without learning complex forms or studying for years in a traditional martial arts studio. Even those with some martial arts background will find useful points for their own training for a real self defense situation. Intermediate to advanced martial artists may want to go for the AttackProof book, but for everyone else, "How To Fight For Your Life" will be a useful reference. This book will be mandatory reading for my girls when they hit their teenage years.

How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Guided Chaos Combatives) Overview

Guided Chaos is an advanced, esoteric and adaptive self-defense system invented by former forensic crime scene expert John Perkins in 1978. It is completely unique, stunningly effective and takes many years to master. However, not everyone has that kind of time...and violent criminals aren't going to wait. The average person needs street and battle-tested methods that can be learned and mastered quickly. That's where Guided Chaos COMBATIVES (GCC) comes in. GCC is the first part of Guided Chaos and is remarkably simple. It is a self-contained system comprised of basic World War II-era strikes and strategies that were designed to be taught to our troops in mere hours before shipping out for jungle warfare in the Pacific against the Japanese, who were all presumed to be karate and judo experts. John Perkins, who is a certified Grandmaster in Combat Martial Arts under the International Combat Martial Arts Federation, has modified and improved these techniques by imbuing them with some of the far more advanced motion principles of Guided Chaos, the most important of which being Dropping Energy, a way of delivering powerful strikes without winding up or chambering. It also improves dynamic balance, which is essential for survival when fighting for your life. GCC is extremely easy to learn and practice on your own and can be mastered in mere weeks with diligent practice. "How to Fight for Your Life" contains principles, photos, diagrams, checklists, strategies and training regimens found nowhere else and designed to quickly maximize your ability to survive criminal violence.

Interpreting Our Heritage

Interpreting Our Heritage Review

Readers:
If you read this then it is sure you are not acquianted with MR.Tilden's Book. This text, now in reprint, is the Standard Work for thoes involved with presenting the Past to the Present. Tho written decades ago, originally for the N.P.S., its vaule has not been diluted with the Passing of Time, and its lessons carry beyound the bounds of the National Park Service Instructional Courses, for which it is written. Much of the text is devote to non-historical sites, the Grand Canyon, Yosemtie Park &tc. but there is much than can be 'borrowed' and applied to Historical Sites, such as Mt.Vernon, Montpeilier &tc. Mr. Tildens '6 Rules of Interpertation' alone, are worth the price of the Book. This writer will state, without reservation, if you are new to Historical Interpertaion or are a Guide at some Natural Feature; or an 'old hand ' who never owned a Copy of this Book; that you Buy a Copy Right Now, read it, mark it well, take some liner notes, and then apply them to your work with the Publick; the Publick will surely gain from your increased ability to communicate the Message of your Location
For the Record, this writer recieved the Book as a gift from his wife, even tho he had been an Historical Interpertor for years. And this writer has gained much from that gift.

Interpreting Our Heritage Overview

Every year millions of Americans visit national parks and monuments, state and municipal parks, battlefields, historic houses, and museums. By means of guided walks and talks, tours, exhibits, and signs, visitors experience these areas through a very special kind of communication technique known as "interpretation." For fifty years, Freeman Tilden's Interpreting Our Heritage has been an indispensable sourcebook for those who are responsible for developing and delivering interpretive programs. This expanded and revised anniversary edition includes not only Tilden's classic work but also an entirely new selection of accompanying photographs, five additional essays by Tilden on the art and craft of interpretation, a new foreword by former National Park Service director Russell Dickenson, and an introduction by R. Bruce Craig that puts Tilden's writings into perspective for present and future generations.

Whether the challenge is to make a prehistoric site come to life; to explain the geological basis behind a particular rock formation; to touch the hearts and minds of visitors to battlefields, historic homes, and sites; or to teach a child about the wonders of the natural world, Tilden's book, with its explanation of the famed "six principles" of interpretation, provides a guiding hand.

For anyone interested in our natural and historic heritage—park volunteers and rangers, museum docents and educators, new and seasoned professional heritage interpreters, and those lovingly characterized by Tilden as "happy amateurs"—Interpreting Our Heritage and Tilden's later interpretive writings, included in this edition, collectively provide the essential foundation for bringing into focus the truths that lie beyond what the eye sees.

Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul, And, of Course, Surfing

Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul, And, of Course, Surfing Review

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It provides an all round view of this awesome athlete, not only on surfing, but life, fitness, diet, his philosophies, and includes insights from those who know him. We gain an appreciation of his holistic approach to his sport and life. An athlete who is not after trophies or accolades, but just wants to live life to the full and push the boundaries. He has a good little core conditioning workout which I now include in my morning routine. My mum always told me to go into the sea if I had an injury, and I note Laird promotes the same. Just one of the many little gems of information in this book. Will definitely remain on my coffee table for all to read.

Force of Nature: Mind, Body, Soul, And, of Course, Surfing Overview

Laird Hamilton has been hailed as the world's greatest big-wave surfer. His first book, Force of Nature, allows readers a rare glimpse inside the unique philosophy that has created his circumstances, and not the other way around. After all, this is a man whose biological father abandoned him shortly after he was born; whose first job was working on a pig far; who dropped out of school in eleventh grade. And then the career decision: surfer. Though earning enough to pay the rent as any kind of surfer is next to impossible, Hamilton has ended up in the place we all desire to be: doing exactly what he loves, becoming the world's best in the process, making a great living, being surrounded by nature and family, radiating peak health and fitness, and succeeding by any definition of the word.
How did he get there? And more importantly, how can the rest of us join him?
Force of Nature is a detailed map to that destination, with Laird Hamilton as the reader's guide. It's not about chasing trophies or accolades or cash. It's about quality over quantitysoul and being true to your physical, mental, and spiritual roots. Not only is it possible to thrive in the modern world without adopting its harmful habits, it's essential. And not only has Hamilton mastered this balance, he makes a compelling and articulate case that anyone who wants to can do the same.
This book is a deeply authoritative and cutting-edge guide to peak fitness in mind, body, sould, and surfing. It comes directly from the source and his inner circle, which includes those at the vanguard of sports, training, nutrition, and more. Former pro volleyball player Gabrielle Reece; surf legend Dave Kalama; fitness gurus Paul Chek, T.R. Goodman, and Don Wildman; and Food Network star Giada De Laurentiis all contribute their knowledge. Readers will get an all-access pass into an elite world filled with definitive and provocative ideas.

The Trapper's Bible: Traps, Snares & Pathguards

The Trapper's Bible: Traps, Snares & Pathguards Review

This book is by no means a "Trappers Bible". It does however contain valuable information. I don't want to come across as not enjoying the book, I enjoyed it very much! But if you're serious about trapping, you'll want to purchase a few more books along with this one. If you're looking for just 1 book on trapping then I'd recomend "Camp Life in the Woods and the Tricks of Trapping" By W. Hamilton Gibson.

The Trapper's Bible: Traps, Snares & Pathguards Overview

The traps, snares and pathguards detailed here can be constructed out of the most basic materials, keeping your expenses down and your net profits up. Includes pest snares, large animal snares, and transplant traps, plus camp alarms that alert you to intruders and deadly pathguards that could save your life.

The Unfettered Mind: Writings from a Zen Master to a Master Swordsman (The Way of the Warrior Series)

The Unfettered Mind: Writings from a Zen Master to a Master Swordsman (The Way of the Warrior Series) Review

Takuan is one of my sources for inspiration, and I value this work. He was born during the Warring States period in 1573 into a Samurai family of the Miura clan, and entered a Jodo-sect Buddhist monastery when he was 10. He joined the Zen Rinzai sect when he was 14, and made history by becoming the abbot of Daitokuji, one of the major temples in Kyoto, at the young age of only 30.

He was a prolific writer who composed over 6 major volumes, of which this is but a small fragment. The three works contained here were all written to great sword masters including Yagyu Munenori, and last piece was possibly to the head of the Itto school of swordsmanship, Ono Tadaaki. The purpose of these works is to unify the spirit of Zen with the spirit of the sword. To transcend the physical duel and have unbroken awareness of everything in the moment.

This is not a book to read quickly and hope to find entertainment or a lesson in history. This is deep martial philosophy written by an absolute genius and master of some of the highest arts in ancient Japan. The book contains a few images of his art and calligraphy, but unless you know what to look for it is hard to see just how great his work is. I bought a repo scroll of his calligraphy when last I was in Japan. There is a standout quality about his style in that his scripting appears three dimensional. In fact, it is almost impossible for at least my mind to follow some of the path. Never seen anything like it. I own an original Tesshu who was a great master, but there is something unique and special about Takuan's style that suggests he may have indeed been operating on a whole different level.

"The unfettered Mind" is very advanced stuff. This is not a casual read, and it will appeal to experienced martial artists willing to work with it and apply deep meditation to the many concepts that may not be apparent at first glance. This is one of the greats.

The Unfettered Mind: Writings from a Zen Master to a Master Swordsman (The Way of the Warrior Series) Overview

So succinct are the author's insights that these writings have outlasted the dissolution of the samurai class to come down to the present and be read for guidance and inspiration by the captains of business and industry, as well as those devoted to the practice of the martial arts in their modern form.

Sailing Alone Around the World (Great Classic Series)

Sailing Alone Around the World (Great Classic Series) Review

The sea and inland waters have given us some great writers. Joseph Conrad was a sea captain, James Fenimore Cooper a naval lieutenant, Mark Twain a Mississippi River pilot, Herman Melville was an able-bodied seaman on whalers and a Naval frigate, Frederick Marryat a midshipman at Trafalgar and a captain when he wrote his first book. Joshua Slocum belongs among them for his writing ability, though he produced only two books, and only one is famous.

In 1895 sailing for pleasure on long ocean passages was almost unknown. Such passages were the province of fully-crewed ships. When the owners of the schooner America wanted to race her in England, they crossed by steamer and left to professionals the task of sailing the vessel across the Atlantic. When the owners of the 54-foot sloop Alice, built in New Hampshire in 1866, wanted to cruise her in Europe, they hired Capt. Arthur Clark to sail the boat across, with a crew of three professionals, a steward, and two young amateur yachtsmen. Merchant ships invariably hailed her as a vessel in distress, assuming such a small yacht could only be so far at sea through misadventure.

Slocum sailed out of Boston, Mass., April 24, 1895, alone on a 37-foot oyster sloop he had rebuilt from a hulk, with the intention of sailing alone around the world. The enterprise seemed foolish. But Slocum was a life-long mariner, had once owned his own ship, and had been tried for murder after shooting two mutineers who came at him with knives. He'd been shipwrecked on the coast of Brazil with his family, built a sampan with a junk rig, and sailed it back to the U.S. His boat, the Spray, was not ideal for the journey. An oyster boat has to be shallow, and such boats can be capsized. Most mariners prefer a boat that can be knocked down on their beam ends and still recover, but this was the boat Slocum had, so it's the one used. He'd tried to find a ship to command, but he was a sailing-ship skipper, and steam was taking over. He'd rebuilt the Spray and tried to make her pay fishing for cod, but found he'd lost the touch for jigging. So he did what he knew, and set out to sea again.

His first wife had died, his second did not care for life at sea, so he sailed alone. He lacked a good chronometer, so celestial navigation was nearly impossible, though at one point he shot a lunar distance sight to confirm his longitude, a feat few modern mariners can do. He had two old alarm clocks he used for dead reckoning (if you reckon wrong, you're dead.)

At every port, he was wined and dined, invited to tell the tale of his voyage so far. Sometimes those dinners became tales themselves, as when a head of state corrected him, saying you do not mean you are sailing around the world, you are sailing around in the world, because he thought the world was flat.

There was no one with him to confirm his sea stories. He said that in the Mediterranean he was chased by a pirate felucca, which was rapidly overtaking him when a squall hit. He stopped to reef, but the felucca did not, and when the squall had passed the felucca was nowhere to be seen.

The tale seems fanciful, but that is largely because of peoples' misconceptions about piracy. Piracy is armed robbery at sea. Most acts of piracy are not committed by career pirates in special pirate vessels. The poet Shelley was killed by pirates, who were in fact fishermen who had decided to kill him and rob him. One of them confessed on his death bed. In 1895, feluccas would have been in common use as commercial and fishing vessels. Slocum would have known something was up when a vessel made all sail to catch him in dangerous conditions.

Or maybe he made it up. We don't know, and at some level, we don't care. He was a charming raconteur, and we accept his story on that basis rather than interrogating the work for its factual truth. He tells of becoming ill from eating bad plums, then hallucinating that Magellan's pilot sailed the vessel for him through the straits named after that explorer. Hey, it could have happened, and it's tales like that that got him wined and dined at every port.

When he finished his voyage in 1898, the country was at war with Spain, and few paid attention to his arrival. He wrote his book, which was serialized in The Century magazine. The war was over by the time the book was finished, and the country was ready to give him his due. His book was an instant best seller, and is still in print today. His imitators in making long offshore passages in small boats are legion. There is a Joshua Slocum Society devoted to chronicling such voyages, though many people prefer to just go, and not tell the society. People have even raced around the world singlehanded without stopping, which I think misses the point of Slocum's voyage. He wasn't testing himself against the sea. He had a lifetime of sailing behind him. Of course, part of the adventure was the voyage, but a big part was the arrivals in new ports, meeting new people, and being part of each new port in a way no mere passenger on a steamship ever could be.

Few people ventured offshore in small boats before Slocum. He showed it could be done, and his account of his adventures made others yearn for the romance of such adventures.

At age 65, Slocum set out for one more solo voyage, this time to South America. He was never seen again.

Sailing Alone Around the World (Great Classic Series) Overview

Challenged by an expert who said it couldn't be done, Josua Slocum, an indomitable New England sea captain, set out in 1895 to prove that a main could sail alone around the world: 46,000 miles in a little over 3 years.
