Runner's World Run Less, Run Faster: Become a Faster, Stronger Runner with the Revolutionary FIRST Training Program Overview

Finally, runners at all levels can improve their race times while training less, with the revolutionary Furman Institute of Running and Scientific Training (FIRST) program.

Hailed by the Wall Street Journal and featured twice in six months in cover stories in Runner's World magazine, FIRST's unique training philosophy makes running easier and more accessible, limits overtraining and burnout, and substantially cuts the risk of injury, while producing faster race times.

The key feature is the "3 plus 2" program, which each week consists of:

-3 quality runs, including track repeats, the tempo run, and the long run, which are designed to work together to improve endurance, lactate-threshold running pace, and leg speed

-2 aerobic cross-training workouts, such as swimming, rowing, or pedaling a stationary bike, which are designed to improve endurance while helping to avoid burnout

With detailed training plans for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon, plus tips for goal-setting, rest, recovery, injury rehab and prevention, strength training, and nutrition, this program will change the way runners think about and train for competitive races.

Amby Burfoot, Runner's World executive editor and Boston Marathon winner, calls the FIRST training program "the most detailed, well-organized, and scientific training program for runners that I have ever seen."

Solo Training: The Martial Artist's Guide to Training Alone

Solo Training: The Martial Artist's Guide to Training Alone Review

Loren's book gave me lots of ideas on how to vary up my workouts. He's right, repetition gets boring. The mind requires new stimulation. You have to have something new and different to look forward to or you will lose interest in the very thing you love. Becoming bored and losing your edge can be fatal on the street.

This book teaches you how to use every part of the body as a weapon, how to frame up your survival or warrior spirit so that you have the right attitude and mindset for a crucial situation. Keeping your training edge is what this book covers well and keeping that training edge, intensity, combined with a smart approach to training will keep you alive.

Loren takes training seriously in terms of the purpose of the drills and focus on effectiveness. As he states in the beginning of the book, training smart is not pampering yourself. Being tough is only really possible if you are first smart otherwise your body will not be conditioned and prepared for those moments when you need it to be touch. Get this book. Follow his advice and don't assume that you know it all. Read it with an open mind and you will receive more and re-examine your basic assumptions. A great read!

Strength Training for Women

Strength Training for Women Review

Although I have no problem growing old, one thing I refuse to accept is my body looking untoned and out of shape. Once one passes the 40th year mark, muscle and bone structure start to "get lost" somewhere in between slouching flesh. Enter Joan Pagano, and her targeted, customized workout she presents us with in her excellent book "Strength training for women".

Ms. Pagano is not only a fitness instructor but has worked with entities like the American and Canadian osteoporosis foundations, as well as SHARE, a group of breast and ovarian cancer survivors in the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Her career started while she designed customized workouts for women with the disease, as well as for women wanting to fight osteoporosis. For me in particular, this hit home, as my mother died of breast cancer, and I must admit it scares me to think about it but I have to face the fact that in a few years, I may have to deal with it myself. Then again - and God willing - I may not.

Nevertheless, and after having looked through several workout books, I decided on this one due to the fact that my specific goals were to build a bit of muscle, endurance and tone my body throughout. Although I do not follow the book fully when I work out, it has made me aware of a myriad of things that for years I have been doing wrong, for instance, the breathing patterns one should adopt while performing squats or push-ups (such as inhaling during exertion, not the other way around).

The book is divided into three main sections to target the main parts of the body women generally need to work on: lower, upper and core. For each, Ms. Pagano offers simple but effective exercises and techniques that can be mostly done at home, sometimes including tips for using specific machines while at the gym. What is very good about this book are the pictures, of excellent quality and polished printing, which are characteristic of every DK Publishing book. Prior to starting the suggested work out routines, the reader is presented with a PAR-Q test - which should be answered openly and honestly - in order to ensure good health with a clean start. The book closes with four suggested routines to target specific areas of concern, and includes a resource list to purchase the limited equipment that is pictured throughout. It even includes specific exercises to be performed when travelling, in the event one may not be in ready access to a gym (guess what I'm including in my packing list next time I go away?).

I must admit that after the first time I worked out at the gym using the suggestions pointed out in this book I felt a considerable difference. My muscles "burned" in a way like they never had before - it felt good, but not painful. The exercises for the core workout are amazing, and I do not know whether it is that I really need to build good definition in my middle area, but I noticed the difference immediately after my very first routine. I can confidently say that if one follows the routines regularly the results can only be outstanding.

The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and On with Your Training

The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and On with Your Training Review

I'm 100 pounds overweight and trying to train for my first (and only) half-marathon (gotta love peer pressure). I am half way through my training and felt I needed a little more boost so I got this book. It was so timely. The things that Dawn was writing about were the exact same things I was totally experiencing (blisters, aches, fatigue, slow weight loss, incredulously increasing mileage). Her book is written in a way to crack you up. It's not for the super serious runner. The title defines perfectly the target audience for this book! The book throws in helpful information while cracking you up. One of the last pages in the book was an exert from her journal - I laughed aloud for 5 minutes with tears rolling down my cheeks. I could not stop cracking up. The book is an easy and quick read (I'm not really a reader but got through the book in only 2 days). If you're an experienced runner - skip this book . . . unless you are mentoring a novice runner than this would give you excellent perspective of what your trainee is going through. If you are new to running with a goal of half or whole marathon - put this in your amazon cart right now!

The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and On with Your Training Overview

Dawn Dais hated running. And it didn't like her much, either. Her fitness routine consisted of avoiding the stairs in her own house, because who really has the energy to climb stairs? It was with this exercise philosophy firmly in place that she set off to complete a marathon.
The Nonrunner’s Marathon Guide for Women is a fun training manual for women who don't believe that running is their biological destiny but who dream of crossing the finish line nonetheless. It opens with a realistic training schedule and is chock-full of how-to's, quizzes, and funny observations, which Dais felt were lacking in the guides she had consulted.
TheNonrunner’s Marathon Guide for Women also integrates entries from Dias' journal, sharing everything would-be marathoners need to know about the gear, the blisters, the early morning workouts, the late-night carb binges, and — most important of all — the amazing rewards.
Anyone can do a marathon. This book just makes the experience a little more bearable and a lot more fun.

Training Plans for Multisport Athletes: Your Essential Guide to Triathlon, Duathlon, Xterra, Ironman & Endurance Racing

Training Plans for Multisport Athletes: Your Essential Guide to Triathlon, Duathlon, Xterra, Ironman & Endurance Racing Review

I bought this book after doing multisport for a few years. Being a disproportionately bad runner compared to my cycling and swimming, I knew I'd need to find a training plan that would help me improve. I'm awfully glad I picked up this book. The author has a great variety of plans for those just starting out in multisport to those looking to make the jump from international distance to Ironman.
I personally chose the 27 weeks to a half-ironman plan. The plan is incredibly time-consuming (on average about 12 hours a week). The exercises and drills are fun and challenging. I've already noticed a huge difference with the integration of her drills. The weight lifting is a critical part of this training, and the phases keep things pretty interesting.
On the downside, I wish she offered more information on Aquabike. USAT has begun pushing this a lot, and I hope she'll consider it for the next edition. The chapter on nutrition was somewhat obvious, I'd highly recommend buying a book on nutrition to go along with this book.
I'd definitely recommened this book regardless of your level of fitness. I think next year I am going to try to the Joe Friel book, but I'm certainly happy I picked this one up this year.

The Cyclist's Training Bible

The Cyclist's Training Bible Review

I read this book twice and nearly gave up on it several times. I repeatedly found the complexity as befuddling as I did amusing. Not only is the program complicated, so is the book.

But I still recommend it.

In order to create a program, I sat down in earnest with a stack of post-its. For everyone's benefit, these are the pages that you need to mark:

pp 47-49
pp 144-147
pp 300-307

Forget the templates. Just create your own Excel sheet for the training diary. I decided not to follow his strength training guideline (more complexity, too much upper body).

Joe Friel's The Cyclist's Training Bible is jam-packed with information, easily the most authoritative book on cycling to date. Friel, a lauded coach and masters athlete from Colorado, adopts the principles of Dr. Tudor Bompa, whose periodization training methods were used first by the dominant Eastern European athletes of the 1960s before becoming popular in the United States.

How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Guided Chaos Combatives)

How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Guided Chaos Combatives) Review

The AttackProof book from the Guided Chaos Combatives group is one of the best sources I've ever read about internal martial arts principles in true self-defense applications. Unfortunately, the book has one glaring fault. While experienced martial artists will recognize the value of the material in AttackProof, the average person who has no self-defense training will find that much of the information is so advanced that it would be difficult for them to use it in a real situation.

Enter "How to Fight For Your Life", a distillation of the AttackProof book for those who have little experience with martial arts and self defense training, but want to learn practical skills to keep themselves safe. This book accomplishes that goal with easy to read prose, good illustrations, and simple strategies and methods that are easily understandable. Perhaps most importantly, the concepts in this book can easily be absorbed by the average person without learning complex forms or studying for years in a traditional martial arts studio. Even those with some martial arts background will find useful points for their own training for a real self defense situation. Intermediate to advanced martial artists may want to go for the AttackProof book, but for everyone else, "How To Fight For Your Life" will be a useful reference. This book will be mandatory reading for my girls when they hit their teenage years.

How to Fight for Your Life: Enhanced Reality-Based Close Combat Training for Self-Defense and Street Survival (Guided Chaos Combatives) Overview

Guided Chaos is an advanced, esoteric and adaptive self-defense system invented by former forensic crime scene expert John Perkins in 1978. It is completely unique, stunningly effective and takes many years to master. However, not everyone has that kind of time...and violent criminals aren't going to wait. The average person needs street and battle-tested methods that can be learned and mastered quickly. That's where Guided Chaos COMBATIVES (GCC) comes in. GCC is the first part of Guided Chaos and is remarkably simple. It is a self-contained system comprised of basic World War II-era strikes and strategies that were designed to be taught to our troops in mere hours before shipping out for jungle warfare in the Pacific against the Japanese, who were all presumed to be karate and judo experts. John Perkins, who is a certified Grandmaster in Combat Martial Arts under the International Combat Martial Arts Federation, has modified and improved these techniques by imbuing them with some of the far more advanced motion principles of Guided Chaos, the most important of which being Dropping Energy, a way of delivering powerful strikes without winding up or chambering. It also improves dynamic balance, which is essential for survival when fighting for your life. GCC is extremely easy to learn and practice on your own and can be mastered in mere weeks with diligent practice. "How to Fight for Your Life" contains principles, photos, diagrams, checklists, strategies and training regimens found nowhere else and designed to quickly maximize your ability to survive criminal violence.
