Lance: The Making of the World's Greatest Champion

Lance: The Making of the World's Greatest Champion Review

Lance: The Making of the World's Greatest Champion Overview

No champion has astonished the world quite like Lance Armstrong. A cancer survivor who went on to win the Tour de France an unprecedented seven times, he is an inspiration to millions. Yet few know the complete story of this brash, smart, and fiercely competitive Texan who battled to the top of his sport, overcame the most rampant case of testicular cancer doctors had seen, and then conquered cycling’s Holy Grail time after time. In Lance: The Making of the World’s Greatest Champion, John Wilcockson draws on dozens of interviews with those who know him best to trace Armstrong’s remarkable, yet controversial journey in vivid detail.

Family members—including his adoptive father speaking publicly for the first time—recall Lance’s humble origins in the backstreets of Dallas, the father he barely knew, his single mom’s struggle for survival, and her second marriage that brought a move to the suburbs and new opportunities. His childhood friends and early mentors remember how he moved on from Little League baseball and football to excel at swimming, running, and triathlon, while living the life of a teenager who loved fast cars and pretty girls. They also describe the circumstances that eventually led to his taking up cycling.

As Lance’s fierce ambition drove him from the dusty plains of Texas to the snowy peaks of Europe, he was both admired and derided. He intimidated his rivals, earned the respect of his teammates, and astounded everyone with his extraordinary deeds. But his achievements have consistently been dogged by allegations of doping and secrecy, and questions of how triumph on such a grand scale could even be possible.

So how did Lance become the supreme champion of his sport? He didn’t do it alone. His compelling story is intertwined with the stories of those who helped shape his life and career, including his mother Linda, ex-wife Kristin, and one-time fiancĂ©e Sheryl Crow, along with those of his mentors, coaches, and friends. Their voices, along with those who helped him expand his cancer foundation into a worldwide movement, are integral to his unique story. Lance also reveals details, many for the first time, of how Armstrong’s legendary training, near-fatal bout with cancer, repeated doping allegations, and hostile European media all pushed him to reach the pinnacle of his sport and rightly claim the title of the world’s greatest champion.

The Horse God Built: The Untold Story of Secretariat, the World's Greatest Racehorse

The Horse God Built: The Untold Story of Secretariat, the World's Greatest Racehorse Review

The Horse God Built: The Untold Story of Secretariat, the World's Greatest Racehorse Overview

“For anybody who loves horses, and for all of those who are thrilled by horse racing and the behind-the-scenes drama of the track, The Horse That God Built is must reading."
--Michael Korda, author of Horse People

Most of us know the legend of Secretariat, the tall, handsome chestnut racehorse whose string of honors runs long and rich: the only two-year-old ever to win Horse of the Year, in 1972; winner in 1973 of the Triple Crown, his times in all three races still unsurpassed; featured on the cover of Time, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated; the only horse listed on ESPN’s top fifty athletes of the twentieth century (ahead of Mickey Mantle). His final race at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack is a touchstone memory for horse lovers everywhere. Yet while Secretariat will be remembered forever, one man, Eddie “Shorty” Sweat, who was pivotal to the great horse’s success, has been all but forgotten---until now.

In The Horse God Built, bestselling equestrian writer Lawrence Scanlan has written a tribute to an exceptional man that is also a backroads journey to a corner of the racing world rarely visited. As a young black man growing up in South Carolina, Eddie Sweat struggled at several occupations before settling on the job he was born for---groom to North America’s finest racehorses. As Secretariat’s groom, loyal friend, and protector, Eddie understood the horse far better than anyone else. A wildly generous man who could read a horse with his eyes, he shared in little of the financial success or glamour of Secretariat’s wins on the track, but won the heart of Big Red with his soft words and relentless devotion.

In Scanlan’s rich narrative, we get a groom’s-eye view of the racing world and the vantage of a man who spent every possible moment with the horse he loved, yet who often basked in the horse’s glory from the sidelines. More than anything else, The Horse God Built is a moving portrait of the powerful bond between human and horse.

Praise for The Horse God Built:

“Scanlan's scope is encyclopedic…”

--Publishers Weekly

"The author's tribute is heartfelt..."

--Kirkus

"...detailed in all its equine awesomeness."

--Maxim

"...will satisfy those who can't get enough of Secretariat."
--The New York Times

“…an informative read that hardboots and novices alike can enjoy.”
--The Lexington Herald Leader (Kentucky)

"Eddie Sweat's story represents the last great untold chapter in the Secretariat saga. Larry Scanlan has honoured both groom and horse by giving it to us at last.
--John Jeremiah Sullivan, author of Blood Horses: Notes of a Sportswriter's Son

"This well-researched book is a must for readers who are fans of the horse, but if you just want a good read, you're going to love this animal/human interest story."
--Monty Roberts, author of The Man Who Listens to Horses

Black Belt Krav Maga: Elite Techniques of the World's Most Powerful Combat System

Black Belt Krav Maga: Elite Techniques of the World's Most Powerful Combat System Review

Krav Maga is a reality based fighting system developed for the Israeli Military and has been adapted for use by civilians and Law Enforcement. I'd been waiting a long time for this book, after reading the prior books 'Krav Maga for Beginners' and 'Complete Krav Maga'. While there are some portions of this book referenced that can be applied to the lower KM levels, the actual black belt techniques shown are VERY high risk and without proper training, can cause serious injury. The book assumes you've already studied KM so this is NOT in any way a KM beginner's book and not all black belt techniques are shown. I've only studied KM (not a BB either) so I have no other system to compare these techniques to.

The Training Methodology section as described is exactly what I've gone through as a student. This section brought up all kinds of memories as I've been through just about every one of those drills as stated or in a variation. As a student of KM for several years, I can say the drills REALLY work and your body learns to respond to the threat. You don't think it. Your body just knows.

Use of Force - This section breaks it down to what constitutes self-defense, legal implications and 'Golden Rules of Self Defense'. While the basic rule in KM is there are no rules, one still has to defend themselves with a reasonable amount of force based on the threat. What's presented here one really needs think about before an attack ever happens at all. You have to check with the laws in your state to make sure you know the consequences of using KM as self-defense.

The rest of the book is broken down into the following sections - Handguns, Carjacking, Handguns vs. Third Parties, Edged Weapons, Blunt Objects vs. Edged Weapons, Blunt Objects vs. Blunt Objects (i.e. sticks, bats), Edged Weapon vs. Edged Weapon and Hand Grenades. You're presented with scenarios and given the Threat (or Attack), Danger and Solution along with photos. The photos really help one get a better handle on what's being described in each scenario and are broken down into manageable steps. The format here is similar to what's in the prior KM books. Unfortunately, in today's world, the scenarios presented are very real.

I'd seen a few of these techniques before but the amount of detail shown in the book is more than I expected. The Use of Common Objects as Distractions and Shields (pages 110, 128, 144) I do have to say aren't just for lack belt level as I've been shown a few of these in my lower level classes before. In weapons defenses, training weapons are always treated as the real thing. You fight the way you train. I've done some of the the techniques here and I've seen them work.

Unless you've studied KM before, you'll find references to techniques not explained in the book, as these are lower level techniques. The book does assume you've studied KM already. Examples are Gun Threat with Active Pushing (Hands Down Variation). The 2nd part of the first sentence 'and perform a sweeping motion (similar to an Outside Defense)..' is a Level 3 technique. In Gun Threat at Shoulder with Wrist Grab 'Your left hand will naturally make a wrist release.' is a Level 1 technique.

About the only section of this book that just looked weird to me were the defenses against hand grenades. Now I'm not saying a situation like this would never come up. As the average person, I don't know that I'd encounter scenarios like this unless I was possibly in Law Enforcement or the Military.

I've had the pleasure of training with both authors and what they do teach is the real deal. It was worth the wait for this book and for you fellow KM students, you're not gonna be disappointed. I know some may say the pictures aren't big enough. Well, this book is a reference and NOT meant to be your sole training guide.

K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain

K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain Review

There are many great reviews already so I would not write anything about chapters and contents.
I really enjoyed reading this book. As others readers I found it addictive and if I remember well I have read it in one weekend. As non-American I found it didactic and very informative.

Some reviewers are criticizing the positions and opions from the authors. In general I liked and respected them all.

The only criticism I might have is related to the 1st summit chapter. In general I felt this chapter being filled with a bit too much of negative feeling.
Maybe I could be biased as I am Italian however here are my thoughts.
I have been reading the last book from Bonatti regarding this ascent and I feel 100% in line with his description and demonstration of the events. Bonatti fought many years for the truth to come up. His career could have been different if others would have acted fairly.
Please, do not get me wrong: I personally think that one expedition members could have been easily sued for involuntary (or voluntary?) manslaughter.
However I am sure that he has been extremely proud to have contributed, maybe with the most important task (together with Mahdi), to the ultimate success of his colleagues reaching the summit that year. One could think he also saved another person's life (Mahdi) and I understand that is a great feeling. As a matter of fact Bonatti celebrated the summit with the teammates immediately after the first portion of the descent. All he wanted was a simple "excuse us/me" and he would have continued the celebrations at the base camp and in following years.
Long story short the chapter should have contained a bit more positive notes.

I will read this book again soon and this time I will read the chapters in chronological order.
I believe I will enjoy it even more. For the first read the chaper order was perfect.

K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain Overview

A thrilling chronicle of the tragedy-ridden history of climbing K2, the world's most difficult and unpredictable mountain, by the bestselling authors of No Shortcuts to the Top

At 28,251 feet, the world's second-tallest mountain, K2 thrusts skyward out of the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan. Climbers regard it as the ultimate achievement in mountaineering, with good reason. Four times as deadly as Everest, K2 has claimed the lives of seventy-seven climbers since 1954. In August 2008 eleven climbers died in a single thirty-six-hour period on K2–the worst single-event tragedy in the mountain's history and the second-worst in the long chronicle of mountaineering in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges. Yet summiting K2 remains a cherished goal for climbers from all over the globe. Before he faced the challenge of K2 himself, Ed Viesturs, one of the world's premier high-altitude mountaineers, thought of it as "the holy grail of mountaineering."

In K2: Life and Death on the World's Most Dangerous Mountain, Viesturs explores the remarkable history of the mountain and of those who have attempted to conquer it. At the same time he probes K2's most memorable sagas in an attempt to illustrate the lessons learned by confronting the fundamental questions raised by mountaineering–questions of risk, ambition, loyalty to one's teammates, self-sacrifice, and the price of glory. Viesturs knows the mountain firsthand. He and renowned alpinist Scott Fischer climbed it in 1992 and were nearly killed in an avalanche that sent them sliding to almost certain death. Fortunately, Ed managed to get into a self-arrest position with his ice ax and stop both his fall and Scott' s.

Focusing on seven of the mountain's most dramatic campaigns, from his own troubled ascent to the 2008 tragedy, Viesturs and Roberts crafts an edge-of-your-seat narrative that climbers and armchair travelers alike will find unforgettably compelling. With photographs from Viesturs's personal collection and from historical sources, this is the definitive account of the world's ultimate mountain, and of the lessons that can be gleaned from struggling toward its elusive summit.

From the Hardcover edition.

Amazon Exclusive: Christopher Reich Reviews K2: Life and Death on the Worlds Most Dangerous Mountain

Christopher Reigh is the New York Times bestselling author of Rules of Vengeance, Numbered Account, and The Patriots Club, which won the International Thiller Writers award for best novel in 2006.

Christopher Reich (photo: Katja Reich)Is there anything more enthralling than a true tale of high adventure well told? Stories about men and women braving impossible odds under daunting conditions in far flung locales, often risking life and limb, keep me glued to the page every time. I’m talking about books like Papillion, Alive, Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm. Well, today, I’m happy to add another book to that list. K2: Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain by Ed Viesturs with David Roberts.

K2 is the world’s second tallest mountain. Located in the Karakoram Range in northern Pakistan, it has more than earned its nickname as the "world’s most dangerous mountain." Just a year ago, thirteen climbers lost their lives on the mountain in a single day. A few mountains may have killed a higher ratio of those who have tried to climb them, notably Annapurna, but none combine the danger, lore, and prestige of K2. In Viesturs’ new book, he tells the story of six expeditions to the fabled mountain. Some successful. Some ill-fated. All spellbinding.

First, a word about the author. Ed Viesturs is widely acknowledged to be among the world’s top five living mountaineers. In 2005, he became the first American to summit all fourteen of the world’s 8000 meter peaks. And he did so without supplemental oxygen. (His fine memoir, No Shortcuts to the Top, chronicles that adventure.) To offer but one example of his prodigious skills, Viesturs once climbed 7,000 feet from an altitude of 16,000 feet to 23,000 feet up a near vertical slope in only eight hours. Did I mention he was carrying a forty-pound pack on his back? The man is to mountaineering what Michael Jordan is to basketball. If that is, Michael Jordan had risked losing his life every time he stepped onto the basketball court.
Be impressed. Be very impressed.

In K2, Viesturs recounts the most dramatic expeditions to the mountain and he does so in today’s frank and honest terms. Older tellings followed the time honored "gentlemen’s code" of ne’er speaking poorly of one’s climbing partners. To read, "The White Spider," by Heinrich Harrer, the story of the first ascent of the Eiger Nordwand written over fifty years ago, is to believe that anyone who ever strapped on a helmet and a harness was  "noble fellow," or a "strong willed lad," whose motivations were as pure as knight seeking the Holy Grail. Viesturs sifts through such rose hued accounts and casts today’s halogen spot light on them. Friendly disagreements amongst climbing pals become knock down, drag out arguments between the fiercest of rivals. Mild discomfort morphs into severe frostbite that costs a man his fingers and toes. And an analysis of where a climber might better have situated an upper altitude camp becomes an indictment of attempted murder. The best example is to compare The Green Berets versus Platoon. Both are about Vietnam; but one is quite a bit more realistic than the other. Similarly, Viesturs' modern updating makes for fascinating reading.

In a sense, K2: Life and Death on the World’s Most Dangerous Mountain is a book written by a mountaineer for mountaineers. Afterall, Viesturs is telling the same story over and over again. But that is exactly what lends the book its magic. Though all of the expeditions shared the same goal, each followed its own unique course. In fact, I often felt as if Viesturs were describing a different mountain altogether. The lesson I took away from this outstanding piece of nonfiction is that K2 seemed to somehow alter its very topography to defeat the "strong-willed lads" and "noble fellows" who tried to conquer it.

And it succeeded much too often.

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks Review

NO SHORTCUTS!
I read allot of mountaineering books. Ed Viesturs story just jumped to one of my favorites. Not only has time proved him to be one of the world's premier mountaineers, but the narrative of this book shows that it is not by luck that he lives to tell the tale. Viesturs is proven to be a man of resolve, character, and discernment. I was apprehensive of reading this book because of many reviews that told of a boastful man who is full of himself. Nobody wants to read a 350 page work of hubris and self adulation. As I read this book and gained respect for the man, I realized that some have mistaken his realistic evaluation of situations as self congratulation. This is an error. Viesturs is an extra-ordinary man(not ordinary). Like an ultra marothoner recalling a 10 mile run as nothing (for most a big feat). When Viesturs recalls things that are just recollections of his normal reality, some may interpret this as a huge ego. However, it is his ability to make clear and unemotional judgments about situations that has gotten him not only up, but down the mountains he has climbed. This is unlike the self flagellation of some who profess humility, while clearly seething with pride at their own meekness. Viesturs makes no such claims. Buy this book, learn from Ed Viesturs, enjoy. I certainly did.

No Shortcuts to the Top: Climbing the World's 14 Highest Peaks Overview

This gripping and triumphant memoir follows a living legend of extreme mountaineering as he makes his assault on history, one 8,000-meter summit at a time.

For eighteen years Ed Viesturs pursued climbing’s holy grail: to stand atop the world’s fourteen 8,000-meter peaks, without the aid of bottled oxygen. But No Shortcuts to the Top is as much about the man who would become the first American to achieve that goal as it is about his stunning quest. As Viesturs recounts the stories of his most harrowing climbs, he reveals a man torn between the flat, safe world he and his loved ones share and the majestic and deadly places where only he can go.

A preternaturally cautious climber who once turned back 300 feet from the top of Everest but who would not shrink from a peak (Annapurna) known to claim the life of one climber for every two who reached its summit, Viesturs lives by an unyielding motto, “Reaching the summit is optional. Getting down is mandatory.” It is with this philosophy that he vividly describes fatal errors in judgment made by his fellow climbers as well as a few of his own close calls and gallant rescues. And, for the first time, he details his own pivotal and heroic role in the 1996 Everest disaster made famous in Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air.

In addition to the raw excitement of Viesturs’s odyssey, No Shortcuts to the Top is leavened with many funny moments revealing the camaraderie between climbers. It is more than the first full account of one of the staggering accomplishments of our time; it is a portrait of a brave and devoted family man and his beliefs that shaped this most perilous and magnificent pursuit.

On Thin Ice: Breakdowns, Whiteouts, and Survival on the World's Deadliest Roads

On Thin Ice: Breakdowns, Whiteouts, and Survival on the World's Deadliest Roads Review

Loved the book - brought back memories of my own much more limited truck-driving experiences with whiteouts, wolves, cold temperatures, Yellowknife NWT, and below-zero temperatures. On the other hand, I've never driven a truck over lake ice, and after reading Rowland's book, have no intention of doing so. I'm CHICKEN! Also haven't done on-road repairs, 18-speeds (only 13), and driving 1,900 miles in a day. (My record is only 900.) On the other hand, I've also been fortunate enough to experience incredible scenery traveling the Alaskan and Dalton highways. Was particularly interesting to learn how they build and maintain ice roads over water. Great reading!

On Thin Ice: Breakdowns, Whiteouts, and Survival on the World's Deadliest Roads Overview

You've watched him battle the odds on History's Ice Road Truckers. Now read Hugh "The Polar Bear" Roland's own storm-by-storm account of surviving and conquering the infamous ice roads of the Arctic. Join Hugh in the front seat of his truck as he shares his most chilling, adrenaline-fueled tales of the world's most dangerous job.

Every year, a fleet of truckers travels beyond the northern equatorial line to the Arctic Circle, battling subzero temperatures and perilous conditions. Though treacherous, it is a region heavily endowed with natural resources. Locating this abundance of natural gas, conflict-free diamonds, and gold is relatively easy; extracting and transporting these goods is another matter entirely. The elite truckers chosen to deliver materials vital to these efforts spend two months traveling distances greater than Western Europe on naturally formed roads of ice that is only sixteen inches thick.

It is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world.

For more than twenty years, Hugh Rowland has survived the ice roads like none other. Each year when the temperature plummets, Rowland leaves his family in Vancouver, Canada, to drive 1,900 miles to Yellowknife, where he will begin his odyssey. Facing the threat of perilous avalanches, hundred-foot cliffs, and the ever-present danger of cracking through the ice, Hugh must push himself to the limit. The payoff is sweet, but Rowland isn't in it just for the money; he is driven by the camaraderie, the call to adventure, and the chance to battle the odds year after year.

From the first snowstorm to the final thaw, On Thin Ice traces the history of ice road trucking, chronicles Rowland's preparation for the trek, and follows him through his perilous journey along the infamous ice roads. Take a ride with Rowland as he recounts tales of epic breakdowns and breathtaking heroism that are just a daily part of the job. In this classic battle of man and machine versus cruelest nature, only the strong will survive to see their payday, their families, and the chance to do it all over again . . . on thin ice.

WHEN HELL FREEZES OVER . . .

"You've never experienced winter until you've lived through one in the far north. It starts in October and doesn't let up until mid-April. The temperatures drop to minus 70, with winds blowing 60 miles an hour. At that temperature, you throw a pot of boiling water or coffee into the air and it will instantly vaporize and turn into snow. It's cold as hell, but it's also full of riches: silver, gold, uranium, diamonds, and oil worth tens of billions of dollars. Locating these treasures in the frozen tundra is the easy part. Getting them out of the ground and bringing them from the frozen wasteland to civilization is a lot tougher. That's my job."

Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World's Best Kept Secrets

Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World's Best Kept Secrets Review

My seven-year old daughter discovered this book and once she realized what Hidden Mickeys were, she was determined to read every section that was related to any park or hotel that we might be utilizing in our upcoming trip to WDW...and then find all those Hidden Mickeys. Thankfully, she didn't make us go to other hotels! I guess we'll save those chapters for future trips.

This book really gave us a fresh, new outlook on our latest visit to WDW. We have already seen and done a lot of what there is to do at WDW (although it doesn't keep us from going back), but after appreciating the concept of Hidden Mickeys, our little girl was even willing to ride rides that previously scared her (e.g., Pirates of the Carribean) because those rides had Hidden Mickeys in them. Go figure! In this book, there are hints and then there are sections that tell you right where to find them. It's up to you how challenging you want the "hunt" to be. She was determined not to look at the outright details, but to rely strictly on the hints. We even had to ride the Epcot/Mexico boat ride TWICE because she thought she had missed one -- ha!

We carried this book around WDW for three full days and had a great time with it. If you think you have seen all there is to see at WDW but you keep going back for more anyway, get a copy of this book and you will suddenly gain an appreciation for the details that the folks at Disney put into their properties. Almost makes you appreciate the cost of entry (almost!). Before you know it, the whole family will be finding Hidden Mickeys, including some that probably were not even intended to be there!

Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World's Best Kept Secrets Overview

There’s a special new way to enjoy Walt Disney World and this book is your guide. Find nearly 400 "Hidden Mickeys"--images of Mickey Mouse cleverly hidden in WDW's theme parks, restaurants, hotels, and other areas by Disney's designers.

Hunting for Hidden Mickeys has escalated into a bona fide vacation mission for many WDW fans. This first guidebook on the subject adds to the fun by turning the search into organized scavenger hunts, complete with clues, hints, points to be scored, and places to tally them. There’s a hunt for each of the major theme parks, plus one for the public areas of the resort hotels and one for all the rest of WDW.

An Index to Mickey's Hiding Places lets visitors who prefer a less competitive approach look for the Main Mouse wherever they find themselves in Mickey’s magical realm. And those who need more help spotting him will find full descriptions of each Hidden Mickey in a separate section of the book.
